Welcome!

Whole of school approaches to literacy

In secondary schools, the work of teaching reading and writing is often seen as belonging with English teachers. However, each curriculum area has its own ways of using language. Students need to learn each of these to succeed.

For a few students the different ways that language is used across the curriculum come fairly easily. However, the majority of students need explicit teaching in the ways that reading and writing are used in different areas. Teachers need to understand the practicalities of reading and writing to be effective teachers of content area literacy.

Languagewise offers teachers from all areas and across both primary and secondary schools a range of resources for improving student literacy across the curriculum. Professional development can be delivered as workshops on specific aspects of reading and writing or as individual support for teachers wanting to improve their practice in these areas.

Languagewise can provide materials and support to address literacy issues across the curriculum for whole of school programs or with a focus on specific content areas. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss your needs.
